Red meat
Beef, veal, lamb, mutton, and goat produced for domestic and export markets. In Australian trade statistics, red meat and livestock export value often includes live animals and co-products; check whether a figure is product only or industry-wide (MLA State of Industry).
Boxed export (chilled and frozen)
Meat processed in export-registered abattoirs and shipped as carcases or cuts. Federal export control sets standards; China and other markets list approved establishments. Distinct from live export.
Live export
Shipment of live cattle, sheep, or other livestock by sea (or air) for slaughter or breeding overseas. Regulated under federal export law with ESCAS welfare requirements. Live sheep exports by sea are legislated to end 1 May 2028 (DAFF phase-out).
ESCAS
Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System — framework requiring exporters to maintain animal welfare standards through the supply chain for live exports. Salient in political debate on sheep and cattle voyages.
Export establishment registration
DAFF registers meat processing establishments for export to specific countries. Suspension of a plant by an importing country (e.g. China GACC delisting) blocks that site only — other establishments may continue trading (verified pattern during 2020–2022 China suspensions).
MLA (Meat & Livestock Australia)
Industry marketing and R&D body; publishes State of Industry, export volumes, and market commentary. Not a regulator — distinguish from DAFF.
DAFF export regulation
Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (and ministers) administer export permits, establishment lists, and market access negotiations with DFAT / Trade.
China beef safeguard tariff
Trigger mechanism under trade agreements: when imports exceed a volume threshold, a higher tariff may apply. Speculated / emerging (2026): media report 55% tariff above quota from 1 Jan 2026 for several suppliers including Australia (Argus Jan 2026) — confirm against official Chinese notice before treating as verified.
GACC
General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China — can suspend or restore individual Australian meat establishments independently of full-country embargoes.
Northern live cattle supply chain
Queensland, Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia breed and aggregate cattle for export via Darwin, Townsville, and other ports — chiefly Indonesia and Vietnam. Policy friction often pits this chain against southern processing and live sheep politics in WA.
